Tadashi Shoji has opened his newly redesigned boutique in Costa Mesa, CA. Tadashi enlisted US-based architecture firm (M)Arch. to transform his 1,175 square foot space in the luxurious South Coast Plaza shopping center. Tadashi Shoji and (M)Arch. have had a creative collaboration since 2002 when the firm first designed Shoji’s house in Pasadena, CA and offices in Los Angeles, CA. (M)Arch. is also designing Tadashi Shoji’s new store in Doha, Qatar which is also slated to open in 2015.
“For over ten years, South Coast Plaza has been a home to our flagship in California and a destination for our international and local client base,” says Tadashi Shoji. “I am excited to celebrate the reopening of the store and offer my customers an entirely new store concept created to deliver a luxurious and engaging experience.”
Inspired by the ambiance and energy of Tadashi Shoji’s runway shows, (M)Arch. has created an elegant, contemporary retail space that suggests a catwalk and a sophisticated sense of luxury. Upon entering, clients will be greeted with a giant plasma screen showcasing video content from Tadashi Shoji’s latest runway show, bringing the physical runway inspiration to life. Behind this video content wall, a rear facing mirror reflects the interior alluring the customer in.
The exterior façade features a backlit, textured glass cube which compliments the interior’s central design element. In the center of the store is an inventive, custom made, architectural design component composed of large textured, translucent, operational vertical glass louvers on steel framing. This can be moved to create private and semi-private shopping experiences which will function as fitting rooms and illusion is created by areas of solidity and transparency. These glass louvers define the novel character of the interior of the boutique and highlight Tadashi’s dedication to providing innovation and craftsmanship.
The environment highlights fashion without overpowering it. “We wanted to define ‘a luxurious moment’ for Tadashi’s clients,” says Sherry Hoffman, partner at (M)Arch., “luxury is reflective of his craftsmanship, about the idea of fit and pattern making, while talking about his ethos of designing for all women of all ages from 17 to 70, and how, within the space, they are transformed to feel more luxurious and more beautiful when they put on a Tadashi Shoji design.”
Warm tones of cream and shades of soft pink are utilized to complement Tadashi Shoji’s fashion designs. A simulated stone ceramic floor tile in a neutral tone has been paired with darker accented tiles curated and positioned in a strip to resemble a runway. The design provides for a modern, unique space that showcases the elegance and timeless beauty of Tadashi Shoji’s ready-to-wear designs, all while staying true to the runway inspiration and providing a luxurious shopping experience.
