Not far from the city of Ningbo in the Zhejiang Province of Shanghai lies the Putuoshan Island. A stunning oasis of beaches, hills, and temples, the Putuoshan Island is also the home of the Putuo Mountain, considered one of the Four Sacred Mountains. To celebrate the Duanwu Festival this year, Tadashi Shoji traveled to the island to visit the historical site. Follow Tadashi’s weekend journey to one of China’s picturesque and spiritual locations.
The Puji Temple is more than 1,000 years old and it is one of the largest temples on the island.
There are three stone bridges that cross the lake. This one is called the “nobility’s bridge.”
Here’s another look at the “nobility’s bridge” through the pavilion window found on the Emperor’s bridge.
Tadashi stands in front of the famous sculpture of the Buddhist deity Guanyin. Many visitors pray to Guanyin for good fortune and health.
